
Even before EU approval for the last four antibiotic growth promoters was withdrawn in 2006, feed and pharmaceutical manufacturers endeavored to develop an adequate substitute. Special attention was directed towards the so-called phytogenic (also herbal) additives.
Many flavours are known to stimulate the production of saliva and gastric juices. Likewise flavour components are also known to positively affect the intestinal flora. It was therefore logical that as a traditional manufacturer of flavours, MICRO-PLUS paved the way very early on by following up on a lead from human nutrition which resulted in the launch of a separate product group. The first groundwork at MICRO-PLUS goes back to the 1980's. Product ideas whose functionality has been scientifically proven to improve feed intake and utilisation as well as daily weight gain. digestarom® has also shown favorable effects on carcass and meat quality. The meat quality is not about changing the taste of the meat itself, but about tenderness and succulency of the meat.
Phytogenic additives are classified according to EC Regulation No. 1831/2003 of the European Parliament and Council, Article 6, Paragraph 1(b) sensory additives; Annex 1, Point 2 (b) flavouring compounds. These functional flavours close the gap that has arisen due to the demise of antimicrobial growth promoters.
